Overview
Betnovate-N (0.1/0.5%) 20g Cream is a dermatological medicine for external use on the skin. It combines betamethasone valerate, a potent topical corticosteroid, with neomycin sulphate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. This combination is intended for inflamed, itchy, red or irritated skin conditions where a secondary bacterial infection is present, suspected, or likely to occur.
The cream format is generally suitable for moist or weeping skin surfaces, because it spreads easily and is less greasy than ointment. Betnovate-N should be used carefully, for the shortest suitable duration, and only on the affected area. Prolonged use, use over large areas, use under airtight dressings, or use on broken or thin skin can increase absorption and the risk of side effects.
Benefits
- Helps reduce inflammation, redness, itching and swelling in steroid-responsive skin conditions
- Provides antibacterial coverage against susceptible bacteria where secondary infection is a concern
- Cream base spreads easily over affected skin
- May support short-course treatment under medical supervision
Key Features
- Combination of a potent topical corticosteroid and an aminoglycoside antibiotic
- Contains betamethasone valerate equivalent to betamethasone 0.1% w/w
- Contains neomycin sulphate 0.5% w/w
- Cream form suitable for moist or weeping skin surfaces
- 20g tube for external skin application
Dosage and How to Use
- How to use: Clean and dry the affected area if appropriate. Apply a small amount thinly and gently rub in. Wash hands after application unless treating the hands. Allow time for absorption before applying an emollient. Do not cover with airtight dressings unless directed.
- Administration: For external topical administration only. Do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, deep wounds and untreated infections.
- Recommended dose: Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily, or exactly as prescribed. Treatment should not usually continue for more than 7 days without medical supervision.
- Adult dose: Thinly apply enough cream to cover the affected area once or twice daily for up to 7 days unless otherwise directed by a healthcare professional.
- Pediatric use: Not recommended or contraindicated for children under 2 years. Children may absorb proportionally larger amounts of topical corticosteroids, so use the minimum effective amount for the shortest possible duration under medical supervision.
- Elderly use: Suitable for elderly patients when clinically indicated, but use the minimum quantity for the shortest duration, especially if kidney function is reduced or systemic absorption is possible.
- When to take: Apply at the time and frequency advised by the prescriber, commonly morning and/or evening for a short course.
- With food: Not applicable; this is an external topical skin medicine.
- Missed dose: Apply when remembered if it is not close to the next scheduled application. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.
- Overdose: Acute topical overdose is unlikely, but chronic overuse, large-area application or use under occlusion may cause systemic corticosteroid effects or neomycin toxicity. Stop inappropriate use and seek medical advice; withdrawal may need to be gradual under supervision.

Allergic reaction
Stop using and seek medical advice if rash, swelling, severe irritation, urticaria, worsening redness, contact dermatitis or other signs of hypersensitivity occur. Neomycin and preservatives such as chlorocresol may cause allergic reactions in some people.
Safety and Precautions
- Do not use for longer than advised or over large areas without medical supervision
- Avoid use on face, eyelids, broken skin, ulcers, genitals or under dressings unless directed
- Avoid contact with eyes because repeated exposure may contribute to cataract or glaucoma
- Do not use for fungal, viral or unsuitable bacterial infections unless specifically advised

- Seek review if symptoms worsen or do not improve within 7 days
- Use cautiously in psoriasis and under regular medical supervision
- Use cautiously in kidney impairment because absorbed neomycin may accumulate
- Do not dilute or mix with other topical products unless advised
When not to use
Hypersensitivity to betamethasone, neomycin, aminoglycosides or any excipient | Children under 2 years | Rosacea | Acne vulgaris | Perioral dermatitis | Pruritus without inflammation | Perianal or genital pruritus alone | Primary viral skin infections | Untreated fungal or yeast skin infections | Primary infected skin lesions not appropriate for this combination | Otitis externa with perforated eardrum | Long-term high-dose or large-area use where significant systemic absorption may occur
Special populations
- Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy is not recommended unless a healthcare professional decides the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Avoid self-use, large-area use or prolonged courses.
- Breastfeeding: The safe use of Betnovate-N during breastfeeding has not been established. Use only if advised by a healthcare professional and do not apply to the breast area before nursing.
- Fertility: No human data are available to evaluate the effect of Betnovate-N on fertility.
- Liver: No specific liver dosing information is available for normal topical use. Use only as directed and avoid excessive application that may increase systemic absorption.
- Kidney: Use cautiously in reduced kidney function because systemic absorption of neomycin may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity. Avoid large-area, prolonged or occlusive use unless medically supervised.
- Heart: No specific heart warning is established for normal short-term topical use, but excessive systemic corticosteroid absorption may contribute to systemic effects such as fluid or blood pressure changes in susceptible patients.
- Driving: A harmful effect on driving or operating machinery is not expected from normal topical use.
- Alcohol: No direct alcohol interaction is expected with normal external topical use. Avoid applying to irritated skin after alcohol-based products unless advised.
Interactions

Food:
- No food interaction is expected because Betnovate-N is applied externally to the skin.
