Overview

Oxcin 0.5% Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic antibiotic solution containing moxifloxacin hydrochloride equivalent to moxifloxacin 5 mg per mL. The 5 mL dropper bottle is intended for topical use in the eye and is prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria. It is not a general treatment for every red or irritated eye because viral, fungal, allergic, traumatic and dry-eye conditions require different management.

Moxifloxacin acts directly against susceptible bacteria at the ocular surface. By controlling the bacterial infection, treatment may help resolve infection-related redness, discharge, irritation, discomfort and eyelid sticking. Completing the prescribed course is important because stopping early can allow infection to persist or recur and may contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Benefits

  • Treats bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible organisms
  • Delivers antibacterial medicine directly to the ocular surface
  • May help resolve infection-related redness, discharge, irritation and discomfort as the infection clears

Key Features

  • Moxifloxacin 0.5% w/v, equivalent to 5 mg/mL
  • Sterile topical ophthalmic solution
  • 5 mL dropper bottle
  • Fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic
  • Prescription-only medicine

Dosage and How to Use

  • How to use: Wash hands, tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instil one drop without touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface. Close the eye gently and press the inner corner near the nose for 2 to 3 minutes. Replace the cap immediately.
  • Administration: For topical ophthalmic use only. Do not inject or swallow. Separate other topical eye medicines by at least 5 minutes.
  • Recommended dose: One drop in the affected eye or eyes three times daily, or exactly as prescribed. Product information indicates that treatment commonly continues for a further 2 to 3 days after improvement, with duration based on clinical response.
  • Adult dose: One drop in the affected eye or eyes three times daily, as prescribed.
  • Pediatric use: No dosage adjustment is generally required in children according to product information. Evidence in neonates is limited, and use for neonatal conjunctivitis is not recommended.
  • Elderly use: No dosage adjustment is generally required.
  • When to take: Three times daily at evenly spaced times, as prescribed.
  • With food: Not applicable; ophthalmic administration is unrelated to meals.
  • Maximum daily dose: Do not exceed the prescribed frequency. The labeled regimen is one drop per affected eye three times daily.
  • Missed dose: Use the missed dose when remembered unless the next dose is nearly due. Skip the missed dose in that situation and continue the regular schedule. Do not use two doses together.
  • Overdose: Ocular overdose is unlikely because the conjunctival sac holds only a small volume. If excessive solution is placed in the eye, gently rinse with clean water. Seek medical advice if significant symptoms occur or if there is concern after accidental ingestion.
